A very common New Year's Resolution is to get fit, and it often implies running. Here are six easy-to-follow tips to start, and enjoy running.

You want to give running a try, but you're afraid you might drop dead on the pavement. Don't worry, it doesn't have to be this way.

I started running a few months ago, and I've already run my first 5k race. If I can do it, then you can do it too!

Tips to Start Running

  • Start where you are, and be objective about it

Have an honest look at yourself: what is your physical condition? What can you do now? Whatever level you're at, what can you possibly aim for?

Let's face it: you might not be able to run a marathon within a week. Be realistic about where you are at this very moment.

  • Set attainable goals

The consequence of the first tip is precisely this: what can you achieve with training, and when? What are your availabilities: will you be able to run twice, or three times a week? Are you willing to set up a discipline? I would advise in the beginning not to go for long distances. You can start by getting ready for a 5k, then see what happens. Only when you feel ready you will be able to tackle long distances.

  • Add extra motivation by signing up for a race

I can hear you thinking, "What? but that's the opposite to the previous tip!". Yes, and no: I am not advocating signing up for the half-marathon taking place next weekend. What you can do though is have a look at the race agenda in your area, and what is up three or four months ahead. And your only goal then would be to finish it, not go for a time record.

Give your body the time to get accustomed to running, and build up confidence in your capabilities.

  • Invest in good running shoes

You may have heard that one over and over, but this is no cheap piece of advice. Running gear as a whole doesn't have to be expensive, but if you should splurge, then splurge on good shoes. By good shoes I mean shoes that are good for you, depending on your build and foot type. Some sport stores are specialized in running shoes and clothing, and they will be more than happy to assist you pick up the right running shoes.

Remember, this tip is all about protecting your feet, ankles, knees, joints, and lower back.

  • Follow a plan

How long should you run, should you walk at all, when we will you be ready, in other words: what do you do now? There are several training plans available on the internet or in books, but I personally recommend the Couch to 5k running program: it is basically a walk-and-run nine-week long program, designed to get you ready for a 5k race by training three times a week.

  • Stretch

After a workout, it is highly important to stretch your body: calves, hamstrings, hips, lower back, as running tightens these areas.

If you follow these simple tips, you will enjoy pounding the pavement!
